How to Control Diabetes Using Simple Exercises

If you have diabetes, your doctor may have advised you to follow simple bodily exercises for better metabolism and effective weight loss management. While a strict diet and consistent medication are both important, the significance of daily exercises can never be discounted.

One of the best exercise means for diabetics is to take up walking at regular intervals each week, preferably at the same time. If the patient performs his exercises on the same time each day and for the same number of minutes or hours, he will be better able to control blood sugar. In fact, a diabetic who walks regularly for at least two hours each week decreases chances of complications leading to death by up to 40%.

Jogging is also an effective cardiovascular exercise which can help a diabetic patient maintain his or her ideal weight. Through jogging and brisk walking, the patient’s body will have better response to the insulin and can successfully manage the levels of glucose in the blood.

However, it is important to remember that if you do your exercise routines after you have taken your meals, you need to take a snack afterwards to prevent a sudden drop in blood sugar, which can also be a dangerous occurrence for most diabetics.

When you have diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle is never recommended. Without proper exercise, your body is prone to put on weight. Then again, this does not mean that you have to strain yourself in the process. When you overstrain yourself, you could easily develop hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Symptoms include shortness of breath, dizziness, and headaches.

The best exercises are those which you derive enjoyment from, and not merely physical results. Sports activities, walking in parks, and jogging with a friend will help you maintain your fitness and manage your weight successfully for the long term.
