Do not worry anymore! Ethnic cosmetic procedures are the solution to your problem.

Even though most of the world is reeling under the worst economic crisis, cosmetic procedures among ethnic patients in the U.S. seem to have gained immense popularity. According to verified data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), with more than 3 million cosmetic procedures being performed across the U.S. in the year 2008, cosmetic procedures among ethnic people showed an increase by 11 percent. The ethnic group in the U.S. that recorded the largest growth in cosmetic procedures was the Hispanics, with an 18 percent growth! That’s really incredible! Only the Caucasians showed a decrease of 2 percent.

For a majority of the ethnic groups, looking good and feeling good is extremely important. Quite a number of these people have canceled their vacations in order to go ahead for minimally-evasive procedures that include injectable fillers and facial rejuvenation procedures. For them, cosmetic procedures give them positive energy and make them feel themselves. Cosmetic procedures like laser skin surfacing and chemical peels can show awesome results if performed by board-certified plastic surgeons, such as surgeons from ASPS. So now take the help of a board-certified plastic surgeon and rejuvenate your skin with an appropriate cosmetic procedure to look good and feel great!

Bacterial Infection

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Bacteria are one celled organisms that are found practically every where, including the human body. A bacterial infection can be defined as an imbalance in bacteria which can harm the body. Localized pain and swelling can be taken as symptoms of a bacterial infection, which are usually limited to a single part of the body. Antibiotics taken over a period of few days to a few weeks can cure most bacterial infections. During bacterial infection, toxins are released that damage healthy cells. The human system is normally not strong enough to fight bacterial infections by itself and hence antibacterial drugs are required to treat them. If left untreated it can lead to Bacteremia where the infection spreads through the blood stream to other parts of the body. So, identifying and treating a bacterial infection in the early stages is important.

Bacterial infection treatment has to start during the early stages of infection to be effective and quick. The history of treating bacterial infection effectively started in 1928, when Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin. By understanding how bacteria destroy cells surrounding them through toxins and by analyzing the structure of different bacteria strains, scientists have been able to produce a number of anti bacterial drugs known as antibiotics each intended for a unique bacterial strain. Antibiotic treatment are classified broadly as those that slow down cell wall formation, those that prevent protein synthesis and those that prevent bacterial metabolism. However, treatment has to be given by medical professionals, only after blood tests to confirm the presence of bacterial infection.

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Healthcare industry is one field where there is always a demand for good professionals – be it doctors or nursing assistants. For a rewarding career with growth prospects and good remuneration, becoming a professional nursing assistant is a great option. This is especially true for people who have a helpful and pleasing nature. Nursing assistants are part and parcel of health care. They typically work under the supervision of a registered nurse and they have duties that are closely and directly connected to the patient. Nursing Assistants need a lot of expertise and practical training to become experts in their profession. They can find openings in hospitals apart from nursing homes, extended care facilities and similar facilities.

STNA or a State tested nursing assistant is a certification given to a person formally trained as a nursing assistant. Anyone wanting to become a nursing assistant has to undergo a course designed for them. Next, they need to undergo clinical training. It means practically working in a medical facility with patients under the supervision of a registered nurse. The final step is to sit for the STNA exam. In almost all states, this exam has to be taken within 90 days from date of course completion. People who take this exam are tested for basic concepts. The exam is divided into 2 parts – one is written and the other is clinical. Being well prepared with all the course material and carefully remembering the clinical skills will help in clearing the exam easily.

Keep Emergency Care afloat

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

In view of the suffering emergency medical care in the US, a new legislation has been introduced by the House and the Senate. It is called “Access to Emergency Medical Services Act”. The ACEP (American College of Emergency Physicians) has recently urged the senate to pass this act with immediate effect and has called for hearings.

The emergency centres are already over crowded. The recession has spurred an increase in the number of people seeking emergency care, who do not have valid insurance. More than 75% of emergency physicians who were polled have said that there is a huge increase in the number of cases who have lost their jobs and consequently their health insurance. There is an imperative need to preserve emergency care, an urgent need to pass this act so that people get emergency care without fail.

Senators have also been giving ideas to ensure that every one gets medical attention immediately when there is an emergency. Some recommendations by them are – there has to be a reduction in emergency care costs, funds to be allocated to aid the needy and an increase in specialists in emergency rooms.

ACEP advances emergency medical care through ongoing education, research and public awareness. ACEP warns that if the Act is not passed soon, Medical Emergency centres are facing a shut down as a consequence of the prevalent economic recession. It requests people to log on to ACEP.org and send a message to their respective legislator in Congress to protect public access to life saving emergency care.

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Almost everyone has dealt with blisters at some point of time in our life. If it is treated as fast as they begin to develop they cure very fast. If we leave them to continue swelling up, then severe consequences with follow. There are various forms and types of blister depending on what caused them, these include herpes blisters, blood blisters, water blister and fever blisters. These falls to be fatal if not handled properly.

Main Causes

There are quite a number of causes of the blisters, which includes:

  1. Allergies. This is whereby the skin is allergic to some chemical reactions including poisonous fluids or substances, washing detergents and other solvents. The reactions usually form an eczema resulting to serious formation of blisters if not treated immediately. Other forms of allergies may result from contact of animals, insect bites, and insect sting that may trigger the formation of blisters.
  2. Individual skin condition. Some autoimmune diseases have serious blisters as a symptom. Blisters form if excessive pressure is applied to an area of the skin. Some examples includes bullous pemphigoid which causes large blisters to form typically in most people with the ages ranging from 60 years and above, another type is dermatitis herpetifomis which is a more serious chronic blister disorder.
  3. Irritation blister are caused by physical and at times chemicals. The examples physical causes may be cited from the blister formed because of excess friction may be from wearing of clothes or on very tight and uncomfortable shoes. The chemical cause an irritation that may cause skin to get swollen and lead to formation of a blister.
  4. The environmental changes (climate change) come will a lot of effect on our skin. High and extreme temperatures even cold affect the skin surface due to either the sunburn or the frostbite and trigger the formation of blisters in gradual change of the temperatures on the skin.
  5. Using of some medication may double the sensitivity of the skin surface leaving the skin so light and vulnerable to the sun rays thus when the bare skin is struck by the sunlight, it will trigger a formation of very severe chronic blisters. This disorder may result from usage of various medications especially the ones with nalidixic acid, furosemide and doxycycline. All these will no doubt cause very serious blistering disorder ranging from the one known as erythema multiforme and toxic epidermal necrolysis are the most severe and common ones causing a third of the skin damage once the skin surface is affected, the results are fatal.
  6. Another one may be infections resulting from bacteria called staphylococci. This will lead to formation of bullous impetigo. Chicken pox infection cannot be omitted since it also causes very serious blister originating from a virus known as varicella zoster
