Staying Fit the Healthy Way
Wednesday, April 1st, 2009If you have opted for the healthy life by exercising and dieting this summer vacation, that is great! Keep up what you have begun even when school resumes. As exercising becomes a discipline for you, you will realize it does not only serve the purpose of making you physically fit, it also helps keep your mind in good condition.
The key words in maintaining this discipline is moderation and motivation. Moderation will teach you how to balance your health regimen. If, for example, you have a sudden urge to pig out on chips, allow yourself a handful instead of suppressing it. Motivation, on the other hand moves you to make healthy choices. If, for example, you have been able to meet your exercise schedule, give yourself an incentive like buying that new pair of shoes you have always wanted. All revved up now for that new exercise set? Wait! Here are a few more tips to help you maintain your regimen:
- Drink plenty of water when exercising. A glass of water 15 to 30 minutes before working out – and stopping for water every 15-20 minutes – keeps you healthily hydrated.
- Do not run on an empty stomach. Make sure you are eating well-balanced meals – avoid fats, seek the whole grains, proteins, fruits and veggies – but do not deny yourself an occasional sinful snack.
- Eat less food more often. According to some experts, loading up during mealtime makes it harder for your body to digest nutrients. Try several small meals throughout the day – even if it is just a fresh fruit smoothie or a whole grain muffin – but make sure you listen to your body when it asks for more!
- Do not fear fat. It is vital in the functioning of your body: Fat is a form of stored energy, it contributes to healthy skin, it is a source of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and it is essential in the structure of many hormones and cell membranes. In other words, you need it but do not overdo it!
